Hi everyone! Welcome to my personal blog. I am Ferran Vendrell-Herrero and here you have a brief description of my research and teaching activities.
I graduated in 2008 (Ph.D., Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona) and I am currently a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Business Economics at Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, UK.
My research has a strong industrial orientation and takes a quantitative approach, with particular expertise in panel data and productivity analysis. My research interests are mostly devoted to the economic analysis of organizations, with special focus on innovation, business models and operations management.
I have published in a variety of journals, including the International Journal of Production Economics, Technovation, Small Business Economics, Regional Studies and Supply Chain Management. Further to this, I have reviewed articles for prestigious journals such as British Journal of Management, Journal of Small Business Management, Industrial Marketing Management, Geoforum or International Journal of Human Resource Management.
I am also Founder and Scientific Director of the International Conference on Business Servitization (ICBS), which is now into its fourth year (www.servitization.org). The next conference will be held in Madrid on November 2015, at the University Rey Juan Carlos, and expects contributions from all over Europe. This conference builds upon the current research activity of the international academic community, which focuses on “the emerging field of servitization”, this is an important topic for enhancing the competitiveness of European manufacturers. In past editions the conference organised open call special issues in Intangible Capital, Strategic Change, Industrial Marketing Management, Competitiveness Review, Universia Business Review and International Journal of Production Economics. All these elements make ICBS a unique academic forum in Europe, since it combines a non-for-profit orientation with a vocation to facilitate publications to authors.
I am also co-investigator of an Horizon 2020- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions project called MAKERS on Smart Manufacturing for EU Growth and Prosperity. I form part of the managing team and "Manufacturing 4.0" workpackage team. This project opens me the opportunity of being a visiting professor in the university of Granada during the academic course 2016-17. In the video below you have an explanation of the Makers project (I appear in min 2:17).
My research goes beyond the academic boundaries, and I have strong collaboration links with leading global companies in the music and publishing industries. Moreover, I am a qualified teacher (HEA Fellow, 2014) as well, with extensive experience teaching at all levels since 2006. I currently teach courses on business economics, macroeconomics, and supply chain management and up to date I have co-supervised three successful PhD dissertations.
In the videos below you can see me in a short seminar explaining why is relevant to undertake a PhD. This was filmed in Nov. 2011 in la Pedrera, one of the most emblematic Gaudi's buildings in Barcelona, and a
